Compress AVIF Online

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a newer format with some of the smallest photo files. Current browsers open it, but many older apps, editors and upload forms do not. This AVIF compressor shows the new file size live, lets you compare before and after, can hit a file size limit and handles up to 50 images at once. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress a AVIF image

  1. Drop your AVIF files onto the page, press Choose images, or paste a picture.
  2. Pick a quality, or set a file size limit such as under 200 KB.
  3. Drag the divider to compare the original with the compressed image. Open Settings for the format, colors or longest side.
  4. Press Download for the current image, or Download all to get every image in one ZIP file.

AVIF compression questions

How do I compress a AVIF image?

Add your AVIF files with the box above, set the quality, a file size limit or a smaller longest side, compare the result with the original and press Download. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How much smaller will my AVIF get?

AVIF is already compressed, so the gain depends on the file. Lowering the quality, setting a file size limit or capping the longest side usually saves the most. If a file cannot get smaller, the original is kept.

Is the compressed AVIF saved as AVIF?

The compressor saves JPEG, WebP or PNG. A AVIF is saved as PNG with Same format, and you can choose Auto, JPEG or WebP in Settings for a smaller file.

What happens to transparency in a AVIF?

See-through areas stay see-through when the result is a PNG or WebP. A JPEG cannot be see-through, so those areas are filled with white.
