Weight Conversion Math Formula
Weight conversions work exactly like length conversions: you multiply by a fraction that equals 1. A kilogram and 1,000 grams are the same amount of stuff, so (1,000 g ÷ 1 kg) is a fancy way of writing 1. Put the unit you want to cancel in the denominator and it disappears.
This converter goes through kilograms. The first fraction takes your unit to kilograms and the second takes kilograms to the unit you picked. Pounds and ounces are defined as exact fractions of a kilogram, so the only rounding you will see is on the last line.
The formula
value in B = value in A × (kg per A) ÷ (kg per B)Example: 10 lb to kg = 10 × 0.45359237 ÷ 1 = 4.5359237 kg
Worked example 1: A 75 kg person, in pounds
75 kg × (1 lb ÷ 0.45359237 kg)Answer: 165.347 lb
Sense check: a kilogram is a little over 2 pounds (2.2046), so the answer should be a little over 150. It comes out near 165, so it passes.
Worked example 2: Twelve and a half stone, in kilograms
12.5 st × (6.35029318 kg ÷ 1 st)Answer: 79.3787 kg
One stone is exactly 14 pounds, so a second route works too: 12.5 × 14 = 175 lb, then 175 × 0.45359237 = 79.3787 kg. Two routes, one answer. That is a good habit when you want to be sure.
Worked example 3: 250 g of flour, in ounces
250 g × (0.001 kg ÷ 1 g) = 0.25 kg0.25 kg × (1 oz ÷ 0.028349523125 kg)Answer: 8.81849 oz
A recipe would round this to 8.8 oz. The ounce here is the avoirdupois ounce used for weighing food, not the fluid ounce, which measures volume.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing mass with weight. Strictly, a kilogram measures mass, the amount of matter, while weight is the force gravity puts on it. A 1 kg object has the same mass on the Moon but weighs about 1.62 newtons there instead of 9.81 N on Earth. In shops and kitchens, kg, lb and oz are all treated as weights, and this page converts them that way.
- Short ton, long ton, tonne. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A US (short) ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg. The British long ton is 2,240 lb, or 1,016.05 kg, and is not included here. The short and long ton differ by 12%, so check which one a document means.
- Ounce versus fluid ounce. An ounce of weight is 28.35 g. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL of volume. They land close for water only: a fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.57 g, near 1.04 oz. For honey, oil or flour the two are not interchangeable.
About weight units
Weight units fall into two families. The metric family (milligram, gram, kilogram, tonne) steps up in powers of ten, so converting inside it is just moving a decimal point. The imperial and US customary family (ounce, pound, stone, ton) steps up in awkward jumps: 16 ounces to the pound, 14 pounds to the stone, 2,000 pounds to the US ton.
The kilogram is the SI base unit. Since 2019 it has been defined by fixing the value of the Planck constant, replacing the platinum-iridium cylinder that was kept near Paris. The pound has been tied to the kilogram since the 1959 agreement: one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, which makes every imperial unit on this page exact as well.
- Milligram (mg)1 mg = 0.000001 kgA thousandth of a gram. Used for medicine doses and vitamins.
- Gram (g)1 g = 0.001 kgA thousandth of a kilogram. The usual unit on food labels and for small items.
- Kilogram (kg)The SI base unit of mass. Since 2019 it has been defined from the Planck constant instead of a physical metal cylinder.
- Metric tonne (t)1 t = 1,000 kgA thousand kilograms. Spelled tonne to tell it apart from the US ton.
- Ounce (oz)1 oz = 0.0283495231 kgOne sixteenth of a pound. Used for food and small parcels in the US.
- Pound (lb)1 lb = 0.45359237 kgExactly 0.45359237 kg and 16 ounces. The abbreviation comes from the Latin libra.
- Stone (st)1 st = 6.35029318 kgExactly 14 pounds. Still how body weight is quoted in the UK and Ireland.
- US ton (ton)1 ton = 907.18474 kgThe US short ton, 2,000 pounds.

Weight converter FAQ
How do I convert pounds to kilograms?
Multiply by 0.45359237, or roughly 0.454. 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.04 kg. To go from kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462 instead: 68.04 × 2.20462 = 150.0 lb.
How many ounces are in a pound?
16. So a quarter-pound burger patty is 4 oz, which is 113.4 g, and a pound of butter is 453.6 g.
How much is a stone in kilograms?
One stone is 14 pounds, which is 6.35 kg. If someone weighs 11 stone 4 pounds, that is 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb, or 71.67 kg.
Is a tonne the same as a ton?
Not quite. A tonne (metric) is 1,000 kg, which is 2,204.62 lb. A US short ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg. A UK long ton is 2,240 lb. The three differ by up to 12%.
Is weight the same as mass?
In daily life people use the words interchangeably. In physics, mass is how much matter an object has and does not change with location, while weight is the gravitational force on it. A person with a mass of 70 kg weighs about 686 newtons on Earth (70 × 9.80665) and about 113 N on the Moon (70 × 1.62).
How many grams are in an ounce?
28.35 g. Cooks often round to 28 g or 30 g, which is fine for a stew. For baking, use the full figure so the error does not add up across the ingredients.
