How to convert PB to EB

File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Petabyte is 1015 bytes and 1 Exabyte is 1018 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 1015 ÷ 1018 = 10−3.

Petabyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One PB is only 0.001 of a EB, which means the decimal point moves 3 places to the left.

These two sit side by side on the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB), so there is nothing to work out beyond remembering that every step is a factor of 1,000.

The formula

EB = PB ÷ 1,0001 PB = 0.001 EB

Worked example 1: Converting 2 PB

2 PB ÷ 1,000 = 0.002 EBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the left.

2 PB is the kind of space a large storage cluster in a data centre can hold.

Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 PB

0.5 PB ÷ 1,000 = 0.0005 EBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the left.

Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 PB

12.75 PB ÷ 1,000 = 0.01275 EBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the left.

Where PB to EB comes up

A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes, or a million gigabytes. Petabytes belong to data centres, research archives, big analytics warehouses and the storage side of large cloud services.

An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes, or a billion gigabytes. Exabytes describe traffic across whole networks, national-scale archives and industry forecasts, not any single file or drive.

Going from petabytes up to exabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.

PB to EB FAQ

How many exabytes are in 1 petabyte?

One petabyte is 0.001 of a exabyte. It takes 1,000 petabytes to make 1 exabyte.

Is PB to EB decimal or binary?

This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At EB the two systems differ by about 15.3%.

How do I convert EB to PB?

Go the other way: multiply by 1,000, which moves the decimal point 3 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
