Exabytes (EB) to Petabytes (PB) Converter

1 EB = 1,000 PB

How to convert EB to PB

File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Exabyte is 1018 bytes and 1 Petabyte is 1015 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 1018 ÷ 1015 = 103.

Exabyte is the bigger unit, so you multiply. Every EB holds 1,000 PB, which means the decimal point moves 3 places to the right.

These two sit side by side on the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB), so there is nothing to work out beyond remembering that every step is a factor of 1,000.

The formula

PB = EB × 1,0001 EB = 1,000 PB

Worked example 1: Converting 1 EB

1 EB × 1,000 = 1,000 PBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the right.

1 EB is only a small fraction of what worldwide internet traffic adds up to in one month.

Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 EB

0.5 EB × 1,000 = 500 PBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the right.

Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 EB

12.75 EB × 1,000 = 12,750 PBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the right.

Where EB to PB comes up

An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes, or a billion gigabytes. Exabytes describe traffic across whole networks, national-scale archives and industry forecasts, not any single file or drive.

A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes, or a million gigabytes. Petabytes belong to data centres, research archives, big analytics warehouses and the storage side of large cloud services.

Going from exabytes down to petabytes always gives a bigger number, because the unit you land on is smaller. It is the usual direction when a limit or a form asks for a smaller unit than the one you have in mind.

EB to PB FAQ

How many petabytes are in 1 exabyte?

There are 1,000 petabytes in 1 exabyte, so 1 EB = 1,000 PB.

Is EB to PB decimal or binary?

This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At EB the two systems differ by about 15.3%.

How do I convert PB to EB?

Go the other way: divide by 1,000, which moves the decimal point 3 places to the left. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
