How to convert TB to YB

File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Terabyte is 1012 bytes and 1 Yottabyte is 1024 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 1012 ÷ 1024 = 10−12.

Terabyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One TB is only 1 × 10−12 of a YB, which means the decimal point moves 12 places to the left.

On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 4 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 4 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 4 times, which is 1012.

The formula

YB = TB ÷ 10121 TB = 1 × 10−12 YB1012 means 1 followed by 12 zeros

Worked example 1: Converting 1 TB

1 TB ÷ 1012 = 1 × 10−12 YBThe decimal point moves 12 places to the left.

1 TB is a common size for a laptop SSD or an external hard drive.

Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 TB

0.5 TB ÷ 1012 = 5 × 10−13 YBThe decimal point moves 12 places to the left.

Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 TB

12.75 TB ÷ 1012 = 1.275 × 10−11 YBThe decimal point moves 12 places to the left.

Where TB to YB comes up

A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, about 250,000 photos at 4 MB each. Terabytes are how consumer SSDs, external drives, home NAS boxes and cloud storage plans are sold.

A yottabyte is 1,000 zettabytes, which is 1024 bytes. Yottabytes are mostly a textbook and forecast unit. You meet them in articles about how large data totals could grow.

Going from terabytes up to yottabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.

TB to YB FAQ

How many yottabytes are in 1 terabyte?

One terabyte is 1 × 10−12 of a yottabyte. It takes 1012 terabytes to make 1 yottabyte.

Is TB to YB decimal or binary?

This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At YB the two systems differ by about 20.9%.

How do I convert YB to TB?

Go the other way: multiply by 1012, which moves the decimal point 12 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
