How to convert TB to QB

File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Terabyte is 1012 bytes and 1 Quettabyte is 1030 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 1012 ÷ 1030 = 10−18.

Terabyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One TB is only 1 × 10−18 of a QB, which means the decimal point moves 18 places to the left.

On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 6 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 6 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 6 times, which is 1018.

The formula

QB = TB ÷ 10181 TB = 1 × 10−18 QB1018 means 1 followed by 18 zeros

Worked example 1: Converting 1 TB

1 TB ÷ 1018 = 1 × 10−18 QBThe decimal point moves 18 places to the left.

1 TB is a common size for a laptop SSD or an external hard drive.

Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 TB

0.5 TB ÷ 1018 = 5 × 10−19 QBThe decimal point moves 18 places to the left.

Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 TB

12.75 TB ÷ 1018 = 1.275 × 10−17 QBThe decimal point moves 18 places to the left.

Where TB to QB comes up

A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, about 250,000 photos at 4 MB each. Terabytes are how consumer SSDs, external drives, home NAS boxes and cloud storage plans are sold.

Quetta- is the SI prefix for 1030, also adopted in 2022, so a quettabyte is 1,000 ronnabytes. Quettabytes are the top of the official SI ladder. They turn up in unit tables and in explanations of the newest prefixes.

Going from terabytes up to quettabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.

TB to QB FAQ

How many quettabytes are in 1 terabyte?

One terabyte is 1 × 10−18 of a quettabyte. It takes 1018 terabytes to make 1 quettabyte.

Is TB to QB decimal or binary?

This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At QB the gap is wider still.

How do I convert QB to TB?

Go the other way: multiply by 1018, which moves the decimal point 18 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
