Terabytes (TB) to Petabytes (PB) Converter
Convert terabytes to petabytes.
1 TB = 0.001 PB
How to convert TB to PB
File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Terabyte is 1012 bytes and 1 Petabyte is 1015 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 1012 ÷ 1015 = 10−3.
Terabyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One TB is only 0.001 of a PB, which means the decimal point moves 3 places to the left.
These two sit side by side on the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB), so there is nothing to work out beyond remembering that every step is a factor of 1,000.
The formula
PB = TB ÷ 1,0001 TB = 0.001 PB
Worked example 1: Converting 1 TB
1 TB ÷ 1,000 = 0.001 PBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the left.
1 TB is a common size for a laptop SSD or an external hard drive.
Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 TB
0.5 TB ÷ 1,000 = 0.0005 PBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the left.
Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 TB
12.75 TB ÷ 1,000 = 0.01275 PBThe decimal point moves 3 places to the left.

Where TB to PB comes up
A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, about 250,000 photos at 4 MB each. Terabytes are how consumer SSDs, external drives, home NAS boxes and cloud storage plans are sold.
A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes, or a million gigabytes. Petabytes belong to data centres, research archives, big analytics warehouses and the storage side of large cloud services.
Going from terabytes up to petabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.
TB to PB FAQ
How many petabytes are in 1 terabyte?
One terabyte is 0.001 of a petabyte. It takes 1,000 terabytes to make 1 petabyte.
Is TB to PB decimal or binary?
This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At PB the two systems differ by about 12.6%.
How do I convert PB to TB?
Go the other way: multiply by 1,000, which moves the decimal point 3 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
