How to convert KB to TB
File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Kilobyte is 103 bytes and 1 Terabyte is 1012 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 103 ÷ 1012 = 10−9.
Kilobyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One KB is only 1 × 10−9 of a TB, which means the decimal point moves 9 places to the left.
On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 3 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 3 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 3 times, which is 109.
The formula
TB = KB ÷ 1,000,000,0001 KB = 1 × 10−9 TB
Worked example 1: Converting 3 KB
3 KB ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 3 × 10−9 TBThe decimal point moves 9 places to the left.
3 KB is about one typed page of plain text.
Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 KB
0.5 KB ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 5 × 10−10 TBThe decimal point moves 9 places to the left.
Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 KB
12.75 KB ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 1.275 × 10−8 TBThe decimal point moves 9 places to the left.

Where KB to TB comes up
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, roughly a short paragraph of text. Kilobytes are the everyday unit for small files such as text documents, icons, config files and scripts, and for tight limits like form uploads or email signatures.
A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, about 250,000 photos at 4 MB each. Terabytes are how consumer SSDs, external drives, home NAS boxes and cloud storage plans are sold.
Going from kilobytes up to terabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.
KB to TB FAQ
How many terabytes are in 1 kilobyte?
One kilobyte is 1 × 10−9 of a terabyte. It takes 1,000,000,000 kilobytes to make 1 terabyte.
Is KB to TB decimal or binary?
This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At TB the two systems differ by about 10%.
How do I convert TB to KB?
