How to convert KB to RB

File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Kilobyte is 103 bytes and 1 Ronnabyte is 1027 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 103 ÷ 1027 = 10−24.

Kilobyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One KB is only 1 × 10−24 of a RB, which means the decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 8 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 8 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 8 times, which is 1024.

The formula

RB = KB ÷ 10241 KB = 1 × 10−24 RB1024 means 1 followed by 24 zeros

Worked example 1: Converting 3 KB

3 KB ÷ 1024 = 3 × 10−24 RBThe decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

3 KB is about one typed page of plain text.

Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 KB

0.5 KB ÷ 1024 = 5 × 10−25 RBThe decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 KB

12.75 KB ÷ 1024 = 1.275 × 10−23 RBThe decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

Where KB to RB comes up

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, roughly a short paragraph of text. Kilobytes are the everyday unit for small files such as text documents, icons, config files and scripts, and for tight limits like form uploads or email signatures.

Ronna- is the SI prefix for 1027, adopted in November 2022, so a ronnabyte is 1,000 yottabytes. Ronnabytes are new and mostly theoretical. You will see them in unit tables and in pieces about how big future data totals might get.

Going from kilobytes up to ronnabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.

KB to RB FAQ

How many ronnabytes are in 1 kilobyte?

One kilobyte is 1 × 10−24 of a ronnabyte. It takes 1024 kilobytes to make 1 ronnabyte.

Is KB to RB decimal or binary?

This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At RB the gap is wider still.

How do I convert RB to KB?

Go the other way: multiply by 1024, which moves the decimal point 24 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
