How to convert KB to PB
File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Kilobyte is 103 bytes and 1 Petabyte is 1015 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 103 ÷ 1015 = 10−12.
Kilobyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One KB is only 1 × 10−12 of a PB, which means the decimal point moves 12 places to the left.
On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 4 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 4 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 4 times, which is 1012.
The formula
PB = KB ÷ 10121 KB = 1 × 10−12 PB1012 means 1 followed by 12 zeros
Worked example 1: Converting 3 KB
3 KB ÷ 1012 = 3 × 10−12 PBThe decimal point moves 12 places to the left.
3 KB is about one typed page of plain text.
Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 KB
0.5 KB ÷ 1012 = 5 × 10−13 PBThe decimal point moves 12 places to the left.
Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 KB
12.75 KB ÷ 1012 = 1.275 × 10−11 PBThe decimal point moves 12 places to the left.

Where KB to PB comes up
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, roughly a short paragraph of text. Kilobytes are the everyday unit for small files such as text documents, icons, config files and scripts, and for tight limits like form uploads or email signatures.
A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes, or a million gigabytes. Petabytes belong to data centres, research archives, big analytics warehouses and the storage side of large cloud services.
Going from kilobytes up to petabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.
KB to PB FAQ
How many petabytes are in 1 kilobyte?
One kilobyte is 1 × 10−12 of a petabyte. It takes 1012 kilobytes to make 1 petabyte.
Is KB to PB decimal or binary?
This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At PB the two systems differ by about 12.6%.
