How to convert GB to YB
File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Gigabyte is 109 bytes and 1 Yottabyte is 1024 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 109 ÷ 1024 = 10−15.
Gigabyte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One GB is only 1 × 10−15 of a YB, which means the decimal point moves 15 places to the left.
On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 5 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 5 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 5 times, which is 1015.
The formula
YB = GB ÷ 10151 GB = 1 × 10−15 YB1015 means 1 followed by 15 zeros
Worked example 1: Converting 4.7 GB
4.7 GB ÷ 1015 = 4.7 × 10−15 YBThe decimal point moves 15 places to the left.
4.7 GB is the capacity of a single-layer DVD.
Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 GB
0.5 GB ÷ 1015 = 5 × 10−16 YBThe decimal point moves 15 places to the left.
Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 GB
12.75 GB ÷ 1015 = 1.275 × 10−14 YBThe decimal point moves 15 places to the left.

Where GB to YB comes up
A gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, about 250 photos at 4 MB each. Gigabytes are the language of phone storage, RAM, mobile data plans, game installs and USB sticks.
A yottabyte is 1,000 zettabytes, which is 1024 bytes. Yottabytes are mostly a textbook and forecast unit. You meet them in articles about how large data totals could grow.
Going from gigabytes up to yottabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.
GB to YB FAQ
How many yottabytes are in 1 gigabyte?
One gigabyte is 1 × 10−15 of a yottabyte. It takes 1015 gigabytes to make 1 yottabyte.
Is GB to YB decimal or binary?
This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At YB the two systems differ by about 20.9%.
How do I convert YB to GB?
Go the other way: multiply by 1015, which moves the decimal point 15 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
