How to convert Bytes (B) to YB

File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Byte is 100 bytes and 1 Yottabyte is 1024 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 100 ÷ 1024 = 10−24.

Byte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One B is only 1 × 10−24 of a YB, which means the decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 8 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 8 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 8 times, which is 1024.

The formula

YB = Bytes (B) ÷ 10241 B = 1 × 10−24 YB1024 means 1 followed by 24 zeros

Worked example 1: Converting 160 B

160 B ÷ 1024 = 1.6 × 10−22 YBThe decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

160 B is about 160 characters of plain ASCII text.

Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 B

0.5 B ÷ 1024 = 5 × 10−25 YBThe decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 B

12.75 B ÷ 1024 = 1.275 × 10−23 YBThe decimal point moves 24 places to the left.

Where Bytes (B) to YB comes up

A byte is eight bits, enough to store one character of plain English text. Bytes show up whenever you need the exact number: file properties, HTTP headers, memory buffers, database column limits and the counts programs print in logs.

A yottabyte is 1,000 zettabytes, which is 1024 bytes. Yottabytes are mostly a textbook and forecast unit. You meet them in articles about how large data totals could grow.

Starting from bytes means turning an exact count into a unit people can read at a glance.

Going from bytes up to yottabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.

Bytes (B) to YB FAQ

How many yottabytes are in 1 byte?

One byte is 1 × 10−24 of a yottabyte. It takes 1024 bytes to make 1 yottabyte.

Is B to YB decimal or binary?

This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At YB the two systems differ by about 20.9%.

How do I convert YB to B?

Go the other way: multiply by 1024, which moves the decimal point 24 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
