Bytes (B) to Gigabytes (GB) Converter
Convert bytes to gigabytes.
1 B = 0.000000001 GB
How to convert Bytes (B) to GB
File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Byte is 100 bytes and 1 Gigabyte is 109 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 100 ÷ 109 = 10−9.
Byte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One B is only 1 × 10−9 of a GB, which means the decimal point moves 9 places to the left.
On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 3 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 3 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 3 times, which is 109.
The formula
GB = Bytes (B) ÷ 1,000,000,0001 B = 1 × 10−9 GB
Worked example 1: Converting 160 B
160 B ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 1.6 × 10−7 GBThe decimal point moves 9 places to the left.
160 B is about 160 characters of plain ASCII text.
Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 B
0.5 B ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 5 × 10−10 GBThe decimal point moves 9 places to the left.
Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 B
12.75 B ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 1.275 × 10−8 GBThe decimal point moves 9 places to the left.

Where Bytes (B) to GB comes up
A byte is eight bits, enough to store one character of plain English text. Bytes show up whenever you need the exact number: file properties, HTTP headers, memory buffers, database column limits and the counts programs print in logs.
A gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, about 250 photos at 4 MB each. Gigabytes are the language of phone storage, RAM, mobile data plans, game installs and USB sticks.
Starting from bytes means turning an exact count into a unit people can read at a glance.
Going from bytes up to gigabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.
Bytes (B) to GB FAQ
How many gigabytes are in 1 byte?
One byte is 1 × 10−9 of a gigabyte. It takes 1,000,000,000 bytes to make 1 gigabyte.
Is B to GB decimal or binary?
This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At GB the two systems differ by about 7.4%.
How do I convert GB to B?
Go the other way: multiply by 1,000,000,000, which moves the decimal point 9 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
