How to convert Bytes (B) to EB
File sizes here use the decimal (SI) system, the same one drive makers and network providers use. In that system 1 Byte is 100 bytes and 1 Exabyte is 1018 bytes. Divide one by the other and you get the ratio between the two units: 100 ÷ 1018 = 10−18.
Byte is the smaller unit, so you divide. One B is only 1 × 10−18 of a EB, which means the decimal point moves 18 places to the left.
On the ladder (B → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB → EB → ZB → YB → RB → QB) these two are 6 steps apart. Every step is a factor of 1,000, so 6 steps means 1,000 multiplied by itself 6 times, which is 1018.
The formula
EB = Bytes (B) ÷ 10181 B = 1 × 10−18 EB1018 means 1 followed by 18 zeros
Worked example 1: Converting 160 B
160 B ÷ 1018 = 1.6 × 10−16 EBThe decimal point moves 18 places to the left.
160 B is about 160 characters of plain ASCII text.
Worked example 2: Converting 0.5 B
0.5 B ÷ 1018 = 5 × 10−19 EBThe decimal point moves 18 places to the left.
Worked example 3: Converting 12.75 B
12.75 B ÷ 1018 = 1.275 × 10−17 EBThe decimal point moves 18 places to the left.

Where Bytes (B) to EB comes up
A byte is eight bits, enough to store one character of plain English text. Bytes show up whenever you need the exact number: file properties, HTTP headers, memory buffers, database column limits and the counts programs print in logs.
An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes, or a billion gigabytes. Exabytes describe traffic across whole networks, national-scale archives and industry forecasts, not any single file or drive.
Starting from bytes means turning an exact count into a unit people can read at a glance.
Going from bytes up to exabytes always gives a smaller number, because you are counting in bigger chunks. People do it to make a long number readable, or to compare a file with the size of a drive or a plan.
Bytes (B) to EB FAQ
How many exabytes are in 1 byte?
One byte is 1 × 10−18 of a exabyte. It takes 1018 bytes to make 1 exabyte.
Is B to EB decimal or binary?
This page is decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 B. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 and still print KB, MB or GB, when they really mean KiB, MiB and GiB. At EB the two systems differ by about 15.3%.
How do I convert EB to B?
Go the other way: multiply by 1018, which moves the decimal point 18 places to the right. The swap button on the converter does it for you.
